Sunday Sermons
Peace is an elusive commodity
Some will spend millions seeking real peace
Bible speaks of two kinds of peace
There is the peace WITH God
There is the peace OF God
Isaiah 26:3-4 — contain a very precious promise
I. KNOWING THE TRUTH V. 3A
You > God Himself
Not found in a place or product
God keeps on keeping on
II. GROWING IN THIS TRUTH V. 3B
A stayed mind = a fixed mind
Especially in times of trouble
III. SHOWING THIS TRUTH V. 3C
“Because he trusts in You”
“Yah” = Yahweh = Jehovah = LORD
He is our peace
Have you ever seen God?
What does He look like?
A theophany = visible expression of God
to humanity
Examples: Moses saw God face to face
Jacob wrestled with God all night
These foreshadow the Incarnation
God is seen — only in Christ!
I Peter shows that God is real & present
For salvation, joy, encouragement, confort
I. A WORD OF REJOICING 1:6-7A
II. A WORD OF REVELATION 1:7-8
III. A WORD OF REDEMPTION 1:8-9
IV. A WORD OF RECOGNITION OF GOSPEL
Angels long to look into salvation’s unfolding!
What a nighty God we serve!
Belief in the reality of Hell is dwindling
Kirk Cameron in a recent Podcast
Concluded: that infinite punishment is not
just … if the offense is finite
Believe in the annihilation of their souls
Is that Biblical thinking?
It fosters liberalism and false doctrine
I. HELL IS BIBLICAL VV.22-23
Matthew 25:44-46; Mark 9:43-46
Revelation 1:18; 20:11-15
II. HELL IS ETERNAL VV.24-25
Rich man himself went to Hell
Every sin has consequences
III. HELL IS ETERNAL VV. 25-26
Not finite but infinite
Endlessness, infiniteness is the awfulness of Hell!
Are you a worrier?
Worry about money? Retirement? Health? Family?
USA?
A granddaughter
A wife
A preacher
Passage is part of the Sermon on the Mount
Jesus talks about treasures, eyes, masters
And then, anxieties!
Three paces to look:
I. LOOK AT THE BIRDS VV.26-27
80 billion birds worldwide
God feeds them all
II. LOOK AT THE LILIES VV.28-30
Wide variety of flowers
If God clothes the flowers, will he take care
of you?
III. LOOK AT THE KINGDOM OF GOD V.31-34
Do you know that God knows all about you?
You fight anxiety with your eyes and knees
Proverbs — written from a wise father to his son
Note chapters 2,3,5,6,7 “my son”
Solomon wrote it but Holy Spirit inspired it!
It is a word from God to us
Three commands and one promise
I. COMMAND #1: V. 5A
“Trust in the LORD with ALL your heart"
Trust = a synonym for faith
II. COMMAND #2: V.5B
“and lean not on your own understanding”
Must learn to lean on Jesus
iii. COMMAND #3: V.6A
“In all your ways acknowledge Him”
acknowledge = to know
IV. A PROMISE V. 6B
“and He shall direct your paths"
Cannot claim the promise without obedience
Sound doctrine is not very popular
It can lead to a compromising Gospel
Easy believism is still alive and well
Doctrine of sin is missing
Emphasis is on the self
Gospel makes much of the Law of God
Law must be preached for others to see Gospel
Acts 16 must be understood in its context
Addressed to a particular individual:
1. He had just witnessed 4 miracles v.26
2. He was deeply stirred v.27-28
3. He felt need for illumination v.29
4. His self confidence was shattered v.28
5. He fell down before Paul & Silas v.29
6. He showed them respect v.30
7. He had a deep concern for his soul vv.33-34
V.30 - When is the last time somebody asked you that?
He believed, repented and was baptized!
The Cross is an event of cosmic proportions
It is a God-event
And forever is to be the message of the
Earthly Church and Heavenly Church
It is the answer to every human problem
I. CROSS IS A TRINITARIAN EVENT
Predestined by the Father vv.3-6
Accomplished by the Son vv.7-10
Applied by the Holy Spirit vv.13-14
II. CROSS AT THE CENTER OF BIBLE
Wisdom found in the Word
And in the Cross of Christ
III. CROSS IS FOOLISHNESS TO THE WORLD
I Corinthians 1:18-23
IV. CROSS CONQUERS SIN AND DEATH
Colossians 2:13-14
V. CROSS VANQUISHES THE POWER OF THE DEVIL
I John 3:8
The main anchor of our lives has been
Sovereign, sustaining grace of God
Didn’t always know it but He was there
Through it all …
Grace never promises you freedom from troubles
He always has the last word!
I. GOD WILL BE OUR PERSONAL GOD V.38
II Cor. 6:15-18 and Philippians 1:6
II. GOD WILL CAUSE US TO PERCEIVE HIM V.39
God is not your buddy or your pal
Romans 3:10-19 We are to fear Him
III. GOD WILL ALWAYS PRESERVE US V.40
He promises to keep His own — Hebrews 13:5
That is what the New Covenant is all about
IV. GOD WILL DO THIS WITH POWER V.41
God will give us sustaining joy!
With infinite intensity

Rebellion was humanity’s first sin
God hates the sin of rebellion
Rebellion is a rejection of God’s will and
commands; to defy God’s authority
We see today this sin is still prevalent:
In society
In the home
In the church
King Saul is the personification of rebellion
I. REBELLION CLOSES HEAVEN TO US VV.3-6
Doesn’t know how to determine God’s will
II. REBELLION RATIONALIZES OUR SIN VV.7-14
Went to see a witch ( A medium}
III. REBELLION REFUSES GOD’S MERCY VV15-20
Saul became an adversary of God Himself
IV. REBELLION BRINGS TEMPORARY COMFORT VV.21-25
Not real or lasting
Easy to go through a dry spell
What do you do when that happens?
David had lost his confidence and joy
God is a faithful Father who waits for us to return
4 ways God sought David
I. BY CHANGING HIS CIRCUMSTANCES 29:1-11
Lived for 16 months in Ziklag
He retreated from the LORD
II. BY REMOVING HIS JOY 30:1-6
Sought joy in the world rather than in God
III. BY GIVING HIM GRACE 30:7-20
What did David do? Look in vv. 9-15
IV. BY INCREASING HIS WISDOM 30:21-31
Wisdom is David’s response in vv.23-24
Look to the LORD if going through a dry spell!

3 lessons to be learned
I. A DEATH ON A MOUNTAIN 31:1-13
A horrible, bloody battle
Many stepped into eternity that day
II. A REPORT FROM THE BATTLEFIELD II SAM 1:1-16
Saul commits suicide after being wounded
Saul was decapitated; later body was rescued
An unexpected messenger arrives
Saul’s rebellion cost him his own life
III. A SONG FOR A FRIEND II SAM 1:17-27
A lamentation = a funeral song
3X “how the mighty have fallen” vv. 19, 25, 27
Idiot = is a negative, pejorative word
It refers to people who do stupid stuff
Do you know any idiots? Close to any?
Can learn a lot from David but also from
the idiots he encountered

I Samuel 1:13-16
II. IDIOT #2: ASAHEL
II Samuel 2:19-23
III. IDIOT #3: KING ISHBOSHETH
II Samuel 3:6-8
IV. IDIOT #4: GENERAL ABNER

Then … David became King!
It is extremely difficult to settle into a new job
Same way with a new house; neighborhood
Being part of a new Kingship is hard as well
For the people and the King ...
4 events helped David to settle into his new role
I. THE MURDER OF ISHBOSHETH 4:1-12
Killed by two Beerothite brothers
Brought his head to David
II. THE REUNIFICATION OF ISRAEL 5:1-5
People acknowledged their need for a King
Same with salvation
III. THE CAPTURE OF JERUSALEM 5:6-16
Jebusites were pagan Caananites
The LORD gave him the city v.10
IV. THE DEFEAT OF THE PHILISTINES 5:17-25
David asked for the Lord’s guidance v.19a
And … got it!
Men usually don’t care about the details
Just "give it to me and let me put it together"
Two categories of believers:
Shoppers =
Buyers =
David was a “buyer” — Acts 13:22
In II Samuel 6 David learns that God cares about details
I. THE RE-LOCATION OF THE ARK 6:1-19
Stayed in Beth-Shemesh for 75 years
Ark to be moved to Jerusalem
Certain details were to be carried out
II. THE REJOICING VV.12-13, 17-19
David has happy and rejoicing
Had a big parade and celebration
III. THE REJECTION OF THE KING V.16
Wife Michal was displeased
David reprimanded her
Very important chapter
Contains an irrevocable promise from God
A covenant means testament
Several covenants that God made
New Covenant is the final fulfillment
I. THE PASSION OF DAVID 7:1-3
He was living a peaceful, blessed life
David wanted to build God a house
II. THE PROMISE OF GOD 7:4-17
Nathan had to tell David “no”
1. God’s feelings about a house vv.4-7
2. God’s exaltation of David vv.8-9
3. God’s provisions for Israel vv.10-11a
4. God’s covenant with David vv.11b-17
Ultimate fulfillment is seen in Christ
III. THE PRAISE OF DAVID 7:18-29
1. He humbled himself
2. He magnified the Lord
